What an aparthotel is
An aparthotel, sometimes written apart-hotel and close to what Kenya usually calls a serviced apartment, is a self-contained apartment let on hotel terms. You get a kitchen, a living area and a bedroom, and behind them a staffed reception, housekeeping, security and maintenance. You book it for a night or for six months, and you do not sign a lease.
The category exists because two familiar options both break at the same point. A hotel room stops working when a stay gets long. A private rental stops working when a stay gets short, or when nobody is there to fix the water heater on a Sunday.

When a hotel is still the right answer
For one to three nights, a hotel is hard to beat. You are not going to cook, daily housekeeping is genuinely useful, and the premium barely registers across two nights. If you are in Nairobi for a conference and a flight home, book a hotel.
When an aparthotel wins
From roughly a week upwards the arithmetic changes, and so do the priorities. Eating every meal out becomes both expensive and tiring. Working from a bed gets old. Laundry becomes a recurring problem rather than a one-off. Weekly and monthly rates undercut the equivalent run of hotel nights, usually substantially.
The recurring cases in Nairobi are consistent: a contract or consultancy of one to six months, a family accompanying a patient through a course of hospital treatment, a relocation while a permanent home is found, a family visit where everyone wants to be under one roof, and corporate stays where an invoice and a fixed rate matter as much as the room.
When a private rental wins
A whole house for a large group, or a stay of many months where you have local support and do not need reception, will often be cheaper on a private rental. The trade is predictability: standards vary enormously between listings, there is rarely anyone on site at 2 AM, and cancellation and refund terms are the host’s own.
Questions worth asking before you book anything

- 3.How often is the apartment cleaned, and is linen included?
- 4.Is the Wi-Fi good enough for video calls, and is there a proper desk?
- 5.What is the cancellation policy if a contract or a treatment plan changes?
- 6.Can you be invoiced in a form your employer will accept?
